Light Shade Wildflower Seed Mixture
These species selected for this mixture are ideally suited to locations where shad is present some or most of the day.

This mixture is composed of long-lived perennials, annuals and biennials that will provide an excellent display of flowers in a moderately shaded area.

1 pound will cover approximately 500 square feet (20' x 25' area)

  • Works best in moderately shady areas
  • 12 different shade tolerant species
  • Can be sown in Spring or Fall
Aquilegia vulgaris
"Garden Columbine"
A perennial that grows to 2 feet high. Blooms in early to late spring. A graceful plant with short-spurred pastel color flowers on long stems above a fern-like foliage. Thrives in partial shade in most well-drained soils.
Chrysanthemum leucanthemum
"Ox-Eye Daisy"
A hardy perennial that grows to 2 feet high. Blooms in late spring, early summer. Large white daisy-like flower heads with yellow centers on single stalks. A popular flower that is easy to grow and reseeds readily. Prefers average soil in partial shade.
Consolida ambigua (Delphinium ajacis)
"Rocket Larkspur"
A showy annual that grows 3-4 feet high with elegant spires of rounded blossoms in violet, pink, blue and white. Blooms in late spring to summer. Thrives in partial shade in well drained soils.
Cynoglossum amabile
"Chinese Forget-Me-Not"
An annual that grows to 8 inches high with showy clusters of small delicate blue flowers. Blooms in spring to early summer and reseeds readily. Prefers well drained soils in partial shade.
Digitalis purpurea
"Common Foxglove"
A biennial that grows to 4 feet high. Blooms spring to summer. Tall showy spikes of spotted ell shaped flowers in colors ranging from white to lavender, pink and purple. An excellent re-seeder. Grows well in moist soils in filtered sunlight or light shade.
Hesperis matronalis
"Dame's Violet"
A perennial that grows 2 1/2 feet high. Blooms early summer to midsummer. Erect branching stems with attractive, fragrant clusters of lilac-colored flowers. Prefers moist, well drained soils in partial shade.
Linaria maroccana
"Toadflax"
An annual that grows to 2 feet high. Flowers in early summer to fall. A member of the Snapdragon family, Toadflax has dainty, small, brightly colored blossoms on slender spikes. Easy to grow even in poor soils. Prefers sun to partial shade.
Lobularia maritima
"Sweet Alyssum"
An annual that grows to 6 inches high. Blooms early spring through the summer. The numerous smaller clusters of white flowers are sweet smelling. Self sows readily and gros rapidly. Prefers cool conditions. In mild winter climates, it will bloom year round. Thrives in partial shade.
Malcolmia maritima
"Virginia Stock"
A delicate annual which grows 6-10 inches high. Blooms spring to early summer. The purplish-pink flowers have a sweet fragrance and bloom for a long time. Easy to grow, quick to bloom and re-seeds easily. Prefers well drained soil in light shad.
Nemophila menziesii
"Baby Blue Eyes"
An annual that grows 6-8 inches high. Blooms in early spring to early summer. The delicate cup-shaped sky blue flowers are one of the first spring flowers to bloom. Prefers moist well drained soils in partial shade.
Papaver shoeas
"Corn Poppy"
An annual that grows to 2 1/2 feet high. Blooms May - July. Large bright red blossoms on individual stems. A showy plant for the first year color. Easy to grow from seed and competes well with grasses. Naturalized throughout U.S., especially in the Midwest and Northeast U.S.
Rudbeckia hirta
"Black-Eyed Susan"
A hardy perennial that grows to 2 feet high. Blooms provide long lasting color in summer through the fall. The flowers are bright yellow with brown centers. Easy to establish and returns for several years. Prefers to grow in sun or partial shade.
