Butterfly Wildflower Seed Mixture
This wildflower gardening mix is designed to attract multitudes of butterflies to its fragrant flowers. The wide range of plants will provide a long season of winged guests.

This mixture is composed of long-lived perennials, annuals and biennials that provide a wide range of flower and fragrances to attract beautiful butterflies.

1 pound will cover approximately 500 square feet (20' x 25' area)

  • Works best in full sun areas, with adequate drainage
  • 14 different wildflowers to attract butterflies
  • Can be sown in Spring or Fall
Achillea millefolium
"Yarrow"
A perennial that grows to 2 1/2 feet high. Blooms spring-fall. White flowers in a cluster, fine feathery leaves ("millefolium" of a thousand leaves) with a pleasant fragrance when crushed. Plants are very adaptable easy to grow from seed and are drought tolerant. Competitive with other plants and grasses. Native throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere.
Centaurea cyanus
"Corn Flower"
An annual that grows to 2 1/2 feet high. Blooms spring-summer. Bright blue flowers (button-like) on multi-stemmed plants. Easy to grow from seed, a favorite of many and also known as Bachelor's Button. Adds a bright splash of color the first year. Naturalized throughout North America.
Coreopsis lancelolata
"Tick Seed"
A perennial that grows to 3 feet high. Bloom sin summer. Bright yellow daisy-like flowers on long wiry stems. Competes well with grasses. Tolerates both drought and prolonged periods of wetness. Prolific bloomer and reseeder. Known as Tick-seed because the seed resembles a tick. Foliage makes an attractive ground cover throughout the year. Native to the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains.
Dianthus barbatus
"Sweet William"
A biennial that grows to 1 1/2 feet high. Blooms spring-summer. Dense clusters of numerous little flowers above shiny green foliage. Flowers range in color from red, white, pink, rose to lilac with a clove-like fragrance. Easily grown.
Echinacea purpurea
"Purple Coneflower"
A perennial that grows to 2 1/2 feet high. Blooms in summer-fall. Flowers have lavender pink petals surrounding radiant red orange cone center. Withstands drought and competes well with grasses. Native to the Midwestern and Southeastern U.S.
Gailladia pulchella
"Indian Blanket"
An annual that grows to 1 1/2 feet high. Blooms summer-fall. Flowers have brilliant red ray petals with yellow tips. Thrives in heat and full sun. Easy to grow from seed. Native east of the Rocky Mountains throughout the Midwestern U.S.
Gilia capitata
"Gilia"
An annual that grows to 2 feet high. Blooms in summer. Numerous small, light blue flowers in dense head-like clusters about 1 inch across. Leaves finely divided. Easily grown.
Hesperis matronalis
"Dame's Rocket"
A perennial that grows 2 1/2 - 3 feet high. Blooms in summer. Erect branching stems with attractive, fragrant clusters of lilac-colored flowers. A sturdy erect plant that is easily grown from seed. Native to Northern U.S.
Lupinus perennis
"Wild Lupine"
A perennial that grows to 2 feet high. Blooms in spring-summer. A bushy plant with long stems of blue, sometimes pink and white flowers borne on erect stems above the foliage. Native to the Northern U.S.
Monarda citriodora
"Lemon Mint"
A perennial that grows to 2 1/2 feet high. Blooms in summer. Whorls and tiers of purple and pink flowers on a single stem which is square. A member of the Laminacea the Mint family, the leaves when crushed release a sweet citrus aroma. Competes well with grasses. Easily grown from seed an tolerates very dry conditions. Native to Midwestern and Southern U.S.
Oenothera lamarckiana
"Evening Primrose"
An annual that grows 2 1/2 - 3 feet high. Blooms in summer-fall. Large, showy, bright yellow flowers with 4 petals or lobes. Blooms during the day and is easily grown from seed.
Phlox drummondii
"Annual Phlox"
An annual that grows to 1 1/2 feet high. Blooms in spring-summer. Clusters of bright red or reddish shades of flowers. Easily grown from seed. Tolerates many soil types. Naturalized throughout the U.S.
Rudbeckia hirta
"Black-Eyed Susan"
A perennial that grows to 2 feet high. Blooms in summer-fall. Flowers have a brown dome center surrounded by bright yellow ray petals. Plants are sturdy, upright with a branching habit. Easy to grow from seed.
Salvia coccinea
"Scarlet Sage"
An annual that grows to 2 feet high. Blooms in summer-fall. Long spikes of bright red tubular flowers above dark green leaves. Easily grown from seed.
